Dina Titus

Dina Titus lost 47% to 48% against Republican Joe Heck in Nevada's 3rd Congressional District. Third party candidates Barry Michaels, Joseph Silvestri, and Scott Narter received 3% of the vote combined. |
Dina Titus (D) is running for re-election for her 2nd term in Nevada’s 3rd District. She faces a general election race.
In 2008, Titus made history by winning Nevada’s 3rd District and becoming the first Democratic to ever represent Clark County in a race where she was outspent by more than $1 million.
Background:
● In 1988, Titus was elected to the Nevada State Senate from the 7th district. From 1993 to 2008 she served as the Democratic Minority Leader in the Nevada Senate.
● In 2008, Titus was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Neveda, turning this swing state’s 3rd district blue for the first time
● In Congress Titus serves on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, the Education and Labor Committee and the Homeland Security Committee
● Titus earned a 100 percent from NARAL Pro-Choice America in 2009
Sutton’s Position on Key Issues:
- Women’s Rights: Titus supports family leave that allows for maternity and paternity leave. She also supports tax breaks for companies that provide on-site day care or subsidize employee’s day care needs. Titus also worked in the Nevada Senate to strengthen domestic violence statutes.
- Reproductive Rights: Titus has long been a defender of women’s reproductive rights. In the Nevada State Senate, Titus sponsored legislation that required the state to cover contraceptives in its health care plans and requiring all insurance companies to cover HPV vaccines. She continues her support in Congress.
- LGBT Rights: Titus has voted to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”. In the Nevada Senate, Titus cosponsored legislation to prohibit employment discrimination based on sexual orientation and enhance the state’s penalties for hate crimes.
General Election Opponents: Titus will face Nevada State Senator Joe Heck, who has been selected as one of the Republican national Party’s “Young Guns”. Heck is firmly anti-choice and has worked hard to win over the Tea Party crowd.
Prospects: Titus’ district has been targeted by the national Republican Party for defeat in 2010. Titus is an institution in Nevadan politics, teaching many of the Nevada state legislators at the University of Nevada and serving 20 years in the state Senate, but GOP targeting has taken its toll; a recent poll shows Titus and Heck in a very tight race.
