Elaine Marshall lost 43% to 55% against Republican Richard Burr. |
Elaine Marshall (D) is running for Senate in North Carolina. She faces both a primary and a general election race.
As the first woman to be elected to executive office in North Carolina, Elaine Marshall has served North Carolinians well during her 4 terms as Secretary of State. She has helped create jobs and worked to fix North Carolina’s economy and is a strong supporter of women’s rights. Marshall would continue to work for the rights of women in the Senate, create jobs, and focus on our national economy.
Background:
- Currently Serves as North Carolina’s Secretary of State and has been re-elected 3 times. Was the first woman to be elected to executive office in the state.
- Served in the North Carolina Senate, named Rookie of the Year and listed among Legislators to Watch by the News & Observer
- Helped small businesses create jobs and helped recover $340 million from major Wall Street banks for North Carolina investors and foundations
Marhsall’s Position on Key Issues:
- Women’s Rights: Supports a woman’s right to choose. Supports IVAWA, CEDAW, and a repeal of the Hyde Amendment.
- LGBT Rights: Supports repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and the Defense of Marriage Act
Primary Opponents:
- Kenneth Lewis: attorney
- Cal Cunningham: attorney, Iraq War veteran, former state Senator
- Marcus Williams: attorney, '92/'08 Gubernatorial candidate
- Ann Worthy: librarian
General Election Opponent:
- Sen. Richard Burr (Incumbent): Burr has voted NO on numerous bills that benefit women, including the Lilly Ledbetter Pay Act and the Franken Amendment to promote justice for women who are raped.
Prospects: Marshall first faces a Democratic primary on May 4. She is currently in a statistical dead heat with Cal Cunningham and Ken Lewis. Cunningham was recruited by Democrats to run, and his moderate views and Iraq service are popular with voters. Cunningham has a slight fundraising edge over Marshall, although Marshall has a significant fundraising advantage over Ken Lewis. We must work hard to push Marshall over Cunningham so we can have a strong advocate for women running against incumbent Richard Burr.
