Mary Jo Kilroy (D) is running for re-election for her 2nd term in Ohio’s 15th District. She faces a general election race.
Representative Kilroy won her seat in one of 2008’s most important House races. She turned her district blue after 42 years of Republican dominance.
Background:
- Prior to her run for Congress, Kilroy served on the Columbus School Board and the Franklin County Board of Commissioners. Franklin County makes up 87% of Ohio’s 15th Congressional district.
- She was elected as Representative to OH-15 in 2008 and served for 2 years
- Kilroy earned a 100 percent rating from NARAL Pro-Choice America in 2009
- She currently serves on the House Financial Services and Homeland Security Committees.
Kilroy's Positions on Key Issues:
- Women's Rights: Reproductive In Congress Kilroy supported the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.
- Reproductive Rights: In Congress Kilroy has taken a stand against anti-choice Representatives, voting against their many attempts to limit women’s reproductive rights.
- LGBT Rights: In 1995, while serving on the Columbus School Board, Kilroy pushed to include sexual orientation in the school district’s non-discrimination policy. In Congress, she has voted in favor of repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”.
General Election Opponents: Kilroy is facing Ohio Republican Steve Stivers, whom she defeated in 2008 by more than 2,000 votes. Stivers is a Columbus politician who has served in the United States National Guard. He is sticking to his party line on many issues, including opposing health care reform.
Prospects: Kilroy’s opponent brought in more than twice that of Kilroy during their second quarter of fundraising. It is important to have a cash advantage in a midterm election to boost voter turnout. Kilroy needs our support now!
