Corrine Brown won 63% to 34% against Republican Michael Yost in Florida's 3rd Congressional District. Third party candidate Terry Martin-Back received 3% of the vote combined. |
Corrine Brown (D) is running for re-election for her 10th term in Florida’s 3rd District. She faces a general election race.
Representative Brown has been an incredible advocate for her community during her past 9 terms as representative for Florida’s 3rd District. As a member of the Veteran’s Affairs Committee in the 111th Congress, she called the first meeting since 1994 on issues concerning women veterans. She has also denounced oil drilling off Florida’s shore and worked to support national high-speed rail.
Background:
● Brown was elected as Representative to FL-3 in 1992 and has been re-elected 8 times.
● Elected to Florida House of Representatives in 1982 and served for 10 years.
● Brown earned a 100 percent rating from Planned Parenthood in 2008.
● Brown currently serves on Veteran’s Affairs Committee and is Chair of the Transportation Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials.
Brown’s Position on Key Issues:
- Women’s Rights:Supports constitutional equality and equal pay.
- Reproductive Rights: Supports a woman’s right to choose without restrictions. In the House, Brown has consistently voted against restrictions to women’s reproductive rights during her nearly 20 year tenure.
- LGBT Rights: Brown has voted in favor of repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and in favor of the Sexual Orientation Employment Nondiscrimination Act
General Election Opponents: Brown faces a slew of Republican and Tea Party opponents. The three main contenders for the Republican nomination are Dean Black, a farmer, business man, and Air Force veteran, Chris Nwasike, who organized the Keep God in America rally earlier this year, and Mike Yost, a former auto mechanic who had a strong grass roots showing to appear on the Republican primary ballot. The Republican primary vote will take place on August 24.
Prospects: The demographics of Brown’s district have begun to change recently, and Republicans are putting a lot of energy into unseating Representative Brown. However, Brown has a long history of service in her district and her chances are seen as favorable.
