Roxanne Conlin is running for Senate in Iowa .

Roxanne Conlin lost 33% to 65% against Republican Chuck Grassley. Libertarian candidate John Heiderscheit received 2% of the vote.

Roxanne Conlin (D) is running for Senate in Iowa. She faces both a primary and general election race.

Roxanne Conlin faces two competitors in Iowa’s June primary, but she is the clear favorite to win the Democratic nomination.  In the general election, Conlin will face Charles Grassley, a long-time Republican incumbent.  Grassley has a 0% rating from Planned Parenthood and NARAL, and has a 100% rating from the National Right to Life Committee. Grassley has never fought for the rights of women, while Conlin has helped female victims of violent crime and helped Senator Biden write the Violence Against Women Act.  We can count on Roxanne Conlin to represent women’s interests if she beats Senator Grassley.

Background:

  • Served as Assistant Attorney General for Iowa, and as part of her duties, authored a law protecting rape victims.
  • Was only the second woman to serve as United States Attorney for the Southern District of Iowa, and prosecuted many cases affecting female victims of violent crime.
  • Earned the Democratic nomination for Governor of Iowa
  • First woman President of the American Association of Justice
  • One of the first women in the Inner Circle of Advocates
  • Helped then-Senator Biden write VAWA

Conlin’s Position on Key Issues:

  • Women’s Rights: Supports a woman’s right to choose and does not support any restrictions on abortion access.
  • LGBT Rights:  Supports marriage equality

Primary Opponents:

  • Bob Krause – former state representative
  • Sal Mohamed - chemical engineer, ran for congress in 2004 from IA-05, 2006 Governor candidate
  • Tom Fiegen - former sate senator.

General Election Opponent:

  • Sen. Charles Grassley (R) – incumbent, won state with 70% of the vote.  Grassley has never voted for the rights of women.

Prospects: Roxanne Conlin faces a primary against two challengers, although most analysts agree that she is the strong favorite in the Democratic primary.   The tough race for Conlin will be against Grassley, who currently holds the Senate seat.  Grassley has an incredibly large lead in fundraising and has served in the Senate since 1974.  The race against Grassley will be difficult for Conlin,  but she is a seasoned campaigner.
